The world-famous Black Forest cuckoo clock originated in the 17th century, however the carved-house form which most of us recognise today, with its chalet style form and slanted roof, first became a popular souvenir in the 19th century. The cuckoo clock is named as such because of the acoustic bird sound that can be heard every hour. This "cuckoo call" is traditionally generated by a pair of organ pipes at different heights inside the clock. Depending on the design, a small door will open on the front of the cuckoo clock each hour and a little mechanical cuckoo carved from wood will come out as the cuckoo noise sounds. Many cuckoo clocks also offer additional action from some of their adorning elements, such as moving figurines or rotating dancers. Traditional cuckoo clocks are mechanically powered by two or three chains with weights attached, plus a pendulum. The clock is wound by gently winding each chain once a day or once in eight days.
At Herrmann Geschenke, you will find an extensive range of original Black Forest cuckoo clocks, available in various designs and different price ranges. Our assortment includes 1-day cuckoo clocks and also models that run for 8-days. Choose your personal favourite- we guarantee that all of our Black Forest cuckoo clocks include the highest-quality mechanisms and are handcrafted in Germany to the highest standard corresponding to 200 years of tradition. This quality is proved by a special certificate of quality from the "Verein der Schwarzwalduhr (VdS)", which is included with every Black Forest cuckoo clock we sell.
Here you can find more information about our partners, the companies "Anton Schneider Söhne GmbH" and Hekas – Helmut Kammerer Clocks, two of the best-known manufacturers of Black Forest cuckoo clocks from Schonach in the Black Forest.
An important difference between various cuckoo clocks, aside from their varying levels of detail and diverse outer appearances, is their running time. Herrmann Geschenke offers many wonderful cuckoo clocks with a 24-hour (1-day) mechanism, in various designs and price ranges. Let yourself be surprised by our wide range of cuckoo clocks and then choose your personal favourite! The running time of a cuckoo clock can be determined by the size of its weights. Cuckoo clocks with a 24-hour mechanism have small weights. The number of weights is also significant: It is worth noting that a mechanical cuckoo clock with two weights offers the traditional cuckoo sound, whereas a clock with three weights offers not only the traditional cuckoo sound, but also additional music as well.

Cuckoo clocks with a 1-day mechanism need to be wound once every 24 hours. Over 24 hours, the cuckoo clock weights will gradually move downwards. As with certain other mechanical clocks, the chains must then be gently pulled by hand until the weights are once again resting at the top (therefore sitting directly under the body of the clock). The running time on this type of clock may be slightly shorter than on those with a spring-mechanism; however this is certainly compensated by the fact that you can easily determine when the clock needs winding simply by the position of its weights, along with the fact that it is not possible to damage these clocks through over-winding.
Alongside our 1-day cuckoo clocks, Herrmann Geschenke also offers beautiful and original Black Forest cuckoo clocks with an 8-day mechanism and a running time of 192 hours. We stock these clocks in a variety of different models and price ranges. All of our cuckoo clocks are handcrafted and rich in detail, with various special effects and designs. We are sure you will find a favourite here! An 8-day clock can be recognised by the size of its weights, which are heavy and large in size. The number of weights is also significant: It is worth noting that a mechanical cuckoo clock with two weights offers the traditional cuckoo sound, whereas a clock with three weights offers not only the traditional cuckoo sound, but also additional music as well.

Anton Schneider began producing cuckoo clocks in a farmhouse in Schonach in the Black Forest back in 1848. The company is now in its sixth generation and has been producing high-quality, original cuckoo clocks in its current location since 1952. In the years between 1952 and 1985, the company's small workshop became a very modern factory. Today, Anton Schneider und Söhne GmbH & co is one of the most modern and largest cuckoo clock factories in the Black Forest. It is an old tradition for the cuckoo clocks to be carved and finished completely by hand. With a great attention to detail and a lot of skill and precision, these qualified clockmakers create cuckoo clocks that bring about joy and appreciation worldwide.
Whether you admire cuckoo clocks in their most simple state, or prefer those decorated with little carved figurines and moving scenery, the catalogue by Anton Schneider currently offers over 300 models to choose from, in sizes from 19cm to 300cm, therefore providing something to satisfy everyone's wishes.
The mechanism inside the clock comes from the clockwork company "REGULA", recognisable through the following marks of quality:
HEKAS was established in 1938 by Mr. Helmut Kammerer. In 1981 the company management was handed over to Mr. Rolf Kammerer, and now in the third generation since 1998 Mr. Uwe Kammerer will be continuing to take over parts of the company's repornsibility.
To be well prepared for this work, Mr. Kammerer junior started in becoming a wood-mechanic, to be followed of his professional aim to be a toolmaker. After having succeeded in both these tasks, he did his studies at the clock-makers-college of Furtwangen.
They are working in our own carpenter workshop, doing here the case production and the production of the blanks for the wood carvings, having thus the guarantee that the clocks are originally and entirely produced in the Black Forest. As in the past as well as nowadays the wood carvings have to be carried out by very skilled and experienced craftsmen, warranting so, that all our HEKAS clocks are handmade.
It is one of their main principles that they care at any time with their entire attention for the perfect quality of their products. They guarantee, that every clock has being checked throughly at their special controll wall for 12 to 24 hours before being despatched.
